Apple Releases Mac OS X 10.5.5 Update
On Tuesday, Apple released theOS X 10.5.5 Leopard Update.
The Mac OS X 10.5.5 Update is recommended for Mac OS X Leopardversions 10.5 through 10.5.4, and according to Apple includes generaloperating system improvements that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac.
To update to Mac OS X 10.5.5, you have the option of using SoftwareUpdate or a standalone installer - the latter being my recommendation. The standalone installer is available in incremental 'Delta' versionthat lets you update from Mac OS X 10.5.3 to 10.5.4 and a comprehensive'Combo' version that lets you update from Mac OS X 10.5 through 10.5.4to 10.5.5. I also recommend using the combo updater even if you're onlymoving up one notch from 10.5.4 to 10.5.5.
To Use a Standalone Installer:
Download the update installer and run it manually. This is also auseful option when you need to update multiple computers but only wantto download the update once. These versions of the standaloneinstallers are available from Apple Support Downloads.
- The Mac OS X 10.5.5 Delta Update (316 MB) lets you update from MacOS X 10.5.4 to 10.5.5.
- The Mac OS X 10.5.5 Combo Update (601 MB) lets you update from MacOS X 10.5 through 10.5.4 to 10.5.5.
To use Software Update (if you must):
Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to automatically checkfor the latest Apple software using the Internet, including thisupdate. (Software Update might have linked you to this article to learnmore about the update.) If your computer is not up-to-date, othersoftware updates available for your computer may appear which youshould install. Note that an update's size may vary from computer tocomputer when installed using Software Update. Also, some updates mustbe installed prior to others, so you should run Software Update morethan once to make sure you have all available updates.
What's included in the 10.5.5 Update:
General
- Includes recent Apple security updates.
- Addresses stability issues with video playback, processor coreidling, and remote disc sharing for MacBook Air.
- Addresses an issue in which some Macs could unexpectedly power onat the same time each day.

Apple 2.0'sPhilip Elmer-DeWitt reports:
'Sales of Macintosh computers continue to grow year-to-year, buttheir rate of growth is slowing, Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster reportedMonday in a note issued to clients.
'Based on data released at midday by the NPD Group, Munsterestimates that Apple will sell 2.8 to 2.9 million Macs and 11 millioniPods in its fourth fiscal quarter, which ends Sept. 30.
'The Mac numbers represent year-to-year unit growth of 29% to 34%,somewhat higher than the Street's estimate of 25%, but downconsiderably from the 43% year-to-year growth the Mac racked up inJuly.'

Plans to Buy a Mac Hit an All-Time High
Apple 2.0'sPhilip Elmer-DeWitt reports:
'ChangeWave is probably best known as a purveyor of e-mailget-rich-quick investment tips. But it also runs a monthly survey ofits 15,000 subscribers that has proven to be a pretty good barometer oftech buying trends. Its latest report, issued Sunday, offers bad newsand good - bad for the industry, good for Apple..'
'The number who picked Apple hit an all-time high for both laptops(34%; up 2 points) and desktops (30%; up 3 points).
'That's a marked increase from the roughly 18% who said they plannedto buy a Mac two years ago and the 28% who said they planned to buy anApple laptop (or 23% who planned to buy a desktop Mac) in August2007.'

NowApple is making surprising and measurable progress against Windows'dominance with a multi-pronged strategy involving broadened retail, mobile computing, and non-computer products and services, according toABI Research..'

Turn Your PC into a Mac with a USB Dongle?
TGDaily'sChristian Zibreg reports:
'Running OS X on a bare-bone PC has been a geek's dream since Appleannounced its switch to Intel processors in 2006. While this effortsucceeded in some cases, a hacked OS X tends to run only on a limitednumber of PC configurations and with more than a just a few hiccups:Software updates are blocked until hackers patch Apple's officialupdates and a hacked OS X, of course, violates Apple's licenseagreement. However, a new hardware solution called EFi-X puts an end tothese issues: It delivers Mac's EFI firmware interface to your PC,fooling the original OS X Leopard installation DVD into thinking it isrunning a genuine Mac.
'A new hardware-based solution called EFi-X offers a fresh take onrunning OS X on your PC. Basically a $155 dongle that plugs into a USBslot on your motherboard (it does not support external USB ports),EFi-X and works as an EFI firmware interface found in every Intel-basedMac. This approach is good enough to fool Mac OS X Leopard intobelieving it is running on a genuine Mac, thus eliminating the need fora hacked OS X installation. Not only can you install Mac OS X from aregular retail DVD, you can also update OS X installation with officialoperating system updates from Apple.'
Editor's note: This would obviously violate the Apple OS X EULA.cm

Canonical Wants Ubuntu on Par with Mac OS in TwoYears
InformationWeek's Paul McDougall reports:
'The CEO of the distributor behind the popular Ubuntu Linuxdistribution said he wants to make the open source operating systemcompetitive with Apple's Mac OS 'within two years.'
'Comparing Linux's uneven market success to date with the meteoricrise enjoyed by Web 2.0 companies such as Craigslist and Facebook,Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth said, 'We need the same urgency, immediacy, and elegance as part of the free desktop experience.'
'Shuttleworth said Canonical has launched a campaign to make thathappen. 'We are hiring designers, user experience champions, andinteraction design visionaries,' Shuttleworth said in a blog postWednesday.
'Canonical's ultimate goal, Shuttleworth wrote, is 'delivering auser experience that can compete with Apple in two years.'
Editor's note: Microsoft, with its deep pockets, has been trying tomatch the Mac experience since 1984 and still hasn't caught up. Ubuntushould set its sites higher than playing copycat and do some innovativework to improve the user experience - as the next article suggests.dk

Ubuntu Should Not Copy the Mac
ZD Net's Dana Blankenhornsays:
'Ubuntu is putting serious investment into improving the interfaceof its Linux.
'Mark Shuttleworth wants Linux to become comparable to the AppleMacintosh, quoting the watchwords of Web 2.0:
- Make your site visually appealing,
- Do something different and do it very, very well,
- Call users to action and give them an immediate, rewardingexperience.
'Good idea. But the Ubuntu Developer Summit is taking the wrongapproach.
'It is past time for open source to become truly innovative. TheMacintosh interface is a nice point-and-click interface, but that's allit is.
'We need something completely different..'

LeopardAssist Helps Install Leopard on SomeUnsupported Macs
PR: LeopardAssist creates an artificial 867 MHz processorenvironment for the simple installation, configuration, and use onsystems axed with Apple's latest Mac OS X release. Take yourclassic G4 to the next level with LeopardAssist.
When Apple released the final system requirements for Mac OS XLeopard, an official cutoff point of 867 MHz was introduced, leavingseveral machines - even those just 67 MHz below and with dualprocessors - out in the cold. For these machines Tiger was the onlyoption, until the community was let at it. For those with the time, discs, and effort, you could modify the disc. For everyone else, therewas Open Firmware, or LeopardAssist.
LeopardAssist originated from Low End Mac in Dylan McDermond'sDecember 6th 2007 post 'FakingOut the Leopard Installer with Open Firmware'. The simpletechniques he used in that article became the basis for the techniqueswe implemented into LeopardAssist.
The application writes a script into your computers Parameter RAM(PRAM) changing the CPU entry in the device tree to 867 MHz. Onrestart, Open Firmware loads as normal with the 867 MHz script inplace, switches to CD or DVD, and boots from it, where the Leopardinstaller takes over.
This simple trick means you don't have to modify your DVD to installLeopard. Finally, when installation is done, the Leopard installer willautomatically restore the default boot drive and return your Mac tonormal operation.
Quick and Simple Leopard, for your older G4.
Version 2.1 overhauls the way LeopardAssist interfaces with yourMac, skipping the AppleScript portion and writing directly into theParameter RAM. In addition it adds several new user requested features, along with various security and interface improvements.
New in version 2.1:
- Now detects G3 processors and notifies accordingly
- Ability to select boot device in LeopardAssist setup assistant(bypass issue with Wireless keyboards/mice not working in bootmanager)
- No longer uses AppleScript, writes directly to Shell
- Added 'Console' to preview the installed script beforerestarting
- Restore System Defaults menu option clears Verbose Mode, 867 MHzscript
- Feedback & Error Reporter menu option added
- Various security patches
- Various interface tweaks
- Redesigned icon
- First version officially tested on OS X Leopard 10.5.4 and Tiger10.4.11
System requirements: Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later (10.4.11 isrecommended, also tested with 10.5.4 for reinstalls).

man i am loving this program i am using media human audio converter and i am convertings 186 music files it has taken less than 5 minutes usually the other programs i use if i was doing this it would take about an hour to an hour and a half this programs is the best. Mina Armanious
Hey! The software is awesome. It took me so long to find an audio converter that wasnt crammed full of useless, superfluous features that I couldn't possible care about. Euan
Wanted to convert some audio files. Used MediaHuman today after struggling with several other apps and tools for the past 4 days. Gosh! Can't tell you what a relief it is to get the job done so easily as I had thousands of sound clips. Thank you guys!!! Divya Raghuram
I am converting thousands of iTunes files to .ogg so I can take my show on the road with Traktor. UR the only 1 that works! DJ-KT
Thanks for the fantastic audio converter! I have a number of AACs that I needed to make to MP3 and this is doing it perfectly.. thanks again! Dustin Hamilton
First of all, I love your audio converter. I have used it to successfully convert most of my FLAC collection to ALAC in order for it to be playable on my Ipod. It's all quite intuitive, I love it! Rory
I just wanted to thank you for this software's existence - I used to use QuickTime 7 (and it was clunky!) to convert audio, but when Apple made it slightly harder to get QuickTime Pro I sought out MediaHuman Audio Converter, and have never looked back. It's saved me plenty of times. Thanks! Josh W.
That is a truly great product, much better than Switch, which I thought too expensive to pay for. I know it is freeware, but couldn't resist a small donation when I saw how beautifully written the software was. Thank you. Jim S.
I have been using your product for a couple years now. I just wanted to tell you folks how much I like it. It is absolutely my goto software for any media conversion. I don't have any money to contribute, but I wanted you guys to know how much I appreciate your software. Thank you very much. Mathew M.
The best WMA to MP3 converter, period. I have more than 10Gb of WMA files to convert to MP3. Your software is just making it a breeze. Having struggled with all the major 'recommended' freewares available, I can say without a doubt that yours is just the best for the task. Many thanks from France. Arnaud
Hi Folks, I just wanted to let you know that your Audioconverter is truly excellent. The GUI is simple and selfexplaining, very clever! Also thanks for implmenting CBR at 320kbps. I converted AIFF files to mp3 and they sound much better than converted with my old iTunes. The mp3s sound loud, clear, fresh and have a punchy bass. Heavy recommendation guaranteed :-) Ernst M.
I just want to congratulate you for the MediaHuman Audio Converter. Variety of choices for audio quality, file extension type and multiple cpu core choice. And checkbox for adding to iTunes while converting. Genius. You saved me from hours of waiting. Well done. Maximos H.
I have to say that this converter, is by far THEE best i have ever used. i had to use this in exchange for the built in iTunes converter because it would chop songs into 0:23 seconds after they were converted and that obviously wasn't the whole song. your converter has done its justice to the shitty apple conversion and hence, why i'm writing this review because it's so damn fast AND it also converts as many files as needed with no ads or requiring a license! it's truly and awesome freeware program!! :) Nic

Downloaded this morning to convert a batch of files, 680+, from WMA to MP3. As a bit of background I started developing software over 40 years ago, which makes me rather picky about how software works. Just wanted to let you know that I am more than pleasantly surprised, this is a great piece of software. I had spent about 3 hours trying other products prior to finding yours, and by far yours is the most full featured and easy to use. Just wanted to drop you a 'thank you', I was looking for a place to leave a review for you, please let me know if there is a place you would like me to leave one. Thanks! Bill D.
MediaHuman Audio Converter is brilliant. It's so good to find really well developed software - so intuitive and therefore a pleasure to use. I've been looking at audio converters for a while now and not found anything that comes even close to your great product. I've been involved in software development all my life and rarely see software that gets the user's experience 'just right' Audio Converter does exactly that. Congratulations. John
